Man City out to equal United Champions League record against Sevilla

Manchester City will be looking to equal a Champions League record set by rivals Manchester United when they welcome Sevilla to the Etihad Stadium for their final group fixture on Wednesday.

The Citizens have already booked their place in the last 16 for the 10th successive season, with a goalless draw away at Borussia Dortmund last week enough to secure top spot in Group G.

Pep Guardiola’s side began their Champions League campaign with a comfortable 4-0 away win over Sevilla before securing back-to-back home victories against Dortmund and Copenhagen.

Indeed, the 5-0 success against Copenhagen at the Etihad extended their unbeaten home run in the Champions League to 22 matches, a streak which began with a 6-0 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in November 2018 and includes 19 wins and just two draws.

Should the Citizens avoid defeat against Sevilla on Wednesday, they will become just the second English team in Champions League history to put together a 23-game unbeaten home run in the competition.

Man United were the last English side to go 23 Champions League matches unbeaten on home soil between 2005 and 2009 under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Red Devils posted 17 victories and six draws during this run, which came to an end at the hands of Turkish giants Besiktas who secured a narrow 1-0 win at Old Trafford in November 2009.

Man City will be confident of extending their impressive unbeaten home run as they have won 81% of their Champions League matches at the Etihad since Guardiola was appointed in 2016, the highest win percentage in the competition’s history after at least 20 home games under the same manager.

The Citizens have won all three previous meetings against Sevilla and Guardiola himself has lost just two of his 13 games as a manager against the Spanish side, with his only home defeat against them suffered in January 2010 when his Barcelona side were beaten 1-0 in the Copa del Rey.

Avoiding defeat on Wednesday will also see City preserve their unbeaten record in the group stage for the third time in the last four seasons.
