Manchester City legend Joe Hart has announced his decision to retire from professional football at the end of the current season. The 36-year-old goalkeeper has been playing for Celtic since 2021 and will be ending his career on his own terms rather than being forced out due to fitness issues.
In a video posted on Celtic’s website, Hart discussed his decision, stating that while he feels physically fit, he wants to ensure that his body does not retire him. He expressed gratitude for his time at the club and the support of the management in allowing him to make this decision public. Hart emphasized that he will not be available to play football next season, highlighting the importance of making this announcement to eliminate speculation regarding his future at the club.
Reflecting on his career, Hart acknowledged that although he feels physically capable, he does not want to be in a position where his body forces him to retire, a key factor behind his decision.
Hart’s career has seen its highs and lows, with his time at Manchester City ending acrimoniously after the arrival of manager Pep Guardiola. However, he remains a club legend at City, having made 348 appearances and played an integral role in the team’s early success following the Abu Dhabi Group’s takeover. He also enjoyed successful loan spells at Torino and West Ham United before joining Burnley in 2018.
Hart’s decision to retire will mark the end of a remarkable career that also saw him earn 75 caps for the England national team. While he will be remembered as a Manchester City great, his contributions to Celtic and the clubs he represented throughout his career will also be celebrated.
