Manchester City and Chelsea faced off in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, marking Cole Palmer’s first return to the stadium since his departure from the club in the summer of 2023. City dropped points after both Liverpool and Arsenal had secured wins earlier in the day.
Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea the lead just before halftime, but with around 10 minutes to go, City managed to level the score when Rodri scored. Although City had plenty of chances, Erling Haaland was not as effective as usual, missing several opportunities to the surprise of the home crowd.
In the end, a draw seemed like a fair result, and Pep Guardiola will be hoping that his team can beat Brentford on Tuesday, which will help close the gap at the top.
Palmer, who joined Chelsea in a £42.5 million transfer, made his first return to the Etihad Stadium since leaving the club, and he was excited for the opportunity to say proper goodbyes to those at the stadium.
He started for Chelsea and made a significant impact, releasing Nicolas Jackson, who provided the assist for Sterling’s goal. Although Palmer was subbed off after 70 minutes, he received applause from most home supporters.
He later expressed his joy at being back at the Etihad Stadium through an Instagram post.
He wrote: “All square. Good performance, nice to be back!”
It was heartwarming to see the majority of City fans give Palmer a good reception, as he left the club on good terms. It was clear that his decision to leave had worked in his favor, and he demonstrated his talent through his performance.
Despite a few boos, Palmer receiving a warm reception illustrated the respect he has among City fans. It was great to see him back, and hopefully, he was able to reconnect with many at the Etihad Stadium. Kudos to Palmer for his impressive performance, clearly showing his potential.
