Some Manchester United officials are now reportedly convinced that their rivals, Manchester City, will have their 115 charges from the Premier League dropped. About a year ago, the Premier League confirmed that they had charged Manchester City with over 100 breaches of its financial rules after a four-year investigation. They referred City to an independent commission over alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018, and accused the club of not cooperating since the investigation started.
In response to the allegations, Manchester City stated that they were surprised by the charge and had a body of irrefutable evidence to support them. With very little public developments on the case and the trial not scheduled until Autumn 2024, rumors of the anticipated outcome have begun to emerge.
According to information from a Manchester City insider, some employees at Manchester United are now convinced that the majority of City’s charges will be dropped, and they believe there will be no serious sporting sanction imposed.
Manchester City and Manchester United have seen the two clubs move closer off the pitch in recent weeks. As part of Jim Ratcliffe’s overhaul of football-focussed boardroom positions, Manchester United secured the signature of Manchester City’s chief football operations officer Omar Berrada to become their new CEO. Jason Wilcox, who left the position of academy director at Manchester City in 2023, has also been linked with a senior post at Manchester United, less than 12 months into his position as director of football at Southampton.
The report also reveals the belief within Old Trafford that Manchester City will see ‘no serious sporting sanction’ imposed. This belief has been fueled by the recent exchange of senior club officials in the direction of Old Trafford, both past and present, as part of Jim Ratcliffe’s overhaul of football-focused boardroom positions.
