Manchester City officials have been closely monitoring the performances of on-loan Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen at Borussia Dortmund this week. After a successful loan spell under Vincent Kompany at Burnley, Maatsen’s future with Chelsea became uncertain as there was little room for him in their squad. The Dutch defender signed a contract extension with Chelsea until 2026, but with a £35 million release clause that is likely to be met based on his recent form.
Manchester City is now reportedly considering Maatsen as a potential left-back option for the upcoming summer transfer window. Other clubs, such as Bayern Munich and Aston Villa, have also shown interest in the versatile defender. Borussia Dortmund will be hoping to secure Maatsen on a permanent deal after his impressive performances with them this season.
City’s other options for the left-back position include Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake, who have both proven themselves in that role. However, if a move for Maatsen or other targets does not materialize, Pep Guardiola can rely on these existing options. In the meantime, City continues to monitor Maatsen’s progress as they contemplate a potential move for the talented defender.
