Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the Premier League champions are growing increasingly confident of signing Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo in a £17M deal.
The Citizens have pursued a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Cucurella throughout the summer but were knocked back after they saw their bid of £30m rejected by the south coast club.
Pep Guardiola’s side are still exploring the possibility of signing the left-back but are aware of the tough nature of the Cucurella deal due to Brighton’s stern stance around the player’s valuation, and have alternatives lined up in case they can’t come to an agreement.
It had been reported by Marca that Guardiola is interested in Benfica’s left-back Alex Grimaldo and that the defender has become an “option” to City.
The Spaniard has been at the Portuguese giants since 2016 and has often been linked with the Manchester club over recent years.
According to Daily Star, Manchester City are ‘growing increasingly confident’ in signing the 26 year-old for £17 million, amid the continued stalemate in their pursuit of Cucurella from the AMEX.
They claims the Benfica left-back favours a move to Man City and could hand in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“This is a strange one for me because if we sign him he isn’t going to he first choice ahead of Cancelo so that makes Esbrand 3rd choice reduces his minutes where as if we signed Cucurella i think he would be first choice lb. I hope it’s a strategy to try get cucurella..”

“Putting pressure on Brighton to sell I reckon. If we were looking at Grimaldo and thought he was the level required, we’d have signed him already.”
