City Football Group, which owns Manchester City and various other football clubs, could buy the rights of River Plate midfielder Nicolas de la Cruz.
The 23-year-old is one of the most valuable players in Marcelo Gallardo’s team and has enjoyed an impressive run of form for the Buenos Aires side.
According to ESPN(via Marca), the midfielder aroused the interest of one of the most powerful business groups in the world: the City Group.
The Spanish media outlet states back in 2020 that Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola had the midfielder in their transfer target list. However, no move ever materialized.
The report adds that the problem for River is that it only has 30 percent of the player’s rights and still has a conflict with Liverpool (Uruguay), owner of the rest of the Uruguayan’s file.
The €18m-rated midfielder has a $20-million release clause that they could activate should they choose to do so if negotiations don’t go their way.
De La Cruz is a versatile attacking midfielder and while his skill could complement other players at City, but the Uruguayan is unlikely to receive regular minutes at the Etihad straight away, due to the attacking midfielder strength the club already have.
