Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has responded subtly to recent comments made by England manager Gareth Southgate.
Southgate witnessed Manchester City defenders Kyle Walker and John Stones sustain muscular injuries during recent international friendlies at Wembley Stadium. Walker was forced off against Brazil and Stones during the draw with Belgium on Tuesday.
City is set to face Arsenal in a crucial Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, marking the start of 10 matches across three competitions for Guardiola’s side before the end of April.
The Sky Blues are aiming to retain last season’s historic treble with scheduled matches in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and Emirates FA Cup.
Despite the busy schedule, Guardiola may have to navigate upcoming games without Walker and Stones, with a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid looming after matches against Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace.
Stones has faced injury issues throughout the season, with Manchester City carefully managing his workload following setbacks.
Southgate’s decision to start Stones in consecutive friendlies drew criticism after the center-back suffered an abductor problem during the midweek game.
While Southgate defended his choice, Guardiola’s frustration was evident as he refrained from commenting on the injury news during his pre-match press conference.
Stones was one of several City players affected by injuries during the international break, with Akanji and Nunes also facing problems.
In addition, Ederson, De Bruyne, and Grealish missed international duty due to injuries but could make a comeback against Arsenal this weekend.
After returning from international duty, Stones underwent scans at the City Football Academy on Thursday, although a timeline for his recovery remains uncertain.
