Manchester City and Manchester United are the only two clubs in English football history to have achieved the Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in a single season. United accomplished this in 1999 with dramatic victories over Bayern Munich in the Champions League Final, while Manchester City matched this feat in 2023 by defeating Inter Milan in the final in Istanbul. Both teams also won their respective domestic cup competitions and the league title to complete the Treble.
When comparing the statistics of Manchester City’s 2022/23 Treble-winning campaign to Manchester United’s 1998/99 campaign, there are some interesting differences. Manchester City played 61 games, winning 44 and drawing 10, scoring 151 goals and conceding 46. Manchester United played 63 games, winning 36 and drawing 22, scoring 128 goals and conceding 63. The cost of the squads also differed significantly, with City’s squad costing £784.3m (adjusted for inflation) compared to United’s £50.7m squad in 1999.
In terms of points in the Premier League and the quality of opposition faced in the FA Cup and Champions League, there are also differences between the two Treble-winning campaigns. Manchester City finished with 89 points in the Premier League, 5 points ahead of 2nd place, while Manchester United finished with 79 points, 1 point ahead of 2nd place. The opposition faced in the FA Cup and Champions League also had different average English pyramid positions and UEFA coefficient rankings, showcasing the varying levels of competition each team faced during their Treble-winning seasons.
