Manchester City were offered the opportunity to sign Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest in the summer, before he ultimately joined Tottenham Hotspur in a £45 million deal. City had already signed a winger in Jeremy Doku by that time and decided not to pursue Johnson despite losing Riyad Mahrez and Cole Palmer. The club may have planned to integrate Doku and then sign another winger in the future.
Nottingham Forest tried to move Johnson on to several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Tottenham, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Brentford, and Crystal Palace. However, only Brentford made an official bid for the versatile forward, eventually securing his services for £32.5 million. Forest were aware of the need to sell Johnson to avoid a potential points deduction and City had only two weeks to make a move before Spurs swooped in for the young player.
Despite speculation, Manchester City made the right decision by not pursuing Brennan Johnson. While Johnson may have been a valuable player off the bench, it is unclear where he would have fit in at City and what value he would have brought to the team. Johnson’s move to Tottenham may have come too early in his career to succeed at a club like Manchester City.
