Since his January move to West Ham on loan from Manchester City, Kalvin Phillips has failed to impress his new coaches, who have been “shocked at how bad” he has been both in games and in training. The midfielder, who struggled to make an impact at City after a £45m move from Leeds in 2022, has lost his place in the England squad due to his lack of playing time and poor performances.
Phillips made just 31 appearances for Manchester City before his loan move, with Pep Guardiola questioning his fitness and weight on multiple occasions. Despite seeking a fresh start with West Ham under David Moyes, things have only deteriorated for him. He has started just three games since joining the Hammers, with his most recent performance against Burnley resulting in him being substituted at halftime.
In the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle, Phillips hit rock bottom when he was brought on to hold the lead but ended up on the losing side. The West Ham coaching staff have reportedly been taken aback by his attitude, claiming he has “lost interest in playing Premier League football” and has been underperforming both in matches and in training since his arrival.
Furthermore, reports suggest that Manchester City are willing to accept a significant financial loss to offload Phillips in the summer transfer window. His valuation has plummeted, and City are prepared to accept a lower fee than initially expected due to his poor performances at West Ham. Despite hopes of boosting his value during his loan spell, it seems Phillips’ future at Manchester City is uncertain.
