Former professional footballer Paul Merson expressed his disappointment at the possibility of Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne moving to a team in the Saudi Pro League.
Reports emerged in late February suggesting that City would consider selling De Bruyne for over £90 million. However, manager Pep Guardiola quickly dismissed these rumors, stating his desire for the Belgian star to remain at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite this, speculation continued that De Bruyne, aged 32, might entertain the idea of a transfer to Saudi Arabia. With two goals and 12 assists since his return from injury, De Bruyne plays a crucial role in City’s lineup for the remainder of the season.
Merson, acknowledging the potential move, admitted his dismay at the prospect of De Bruyne leaving City for a Saudi team.
In an interview with Sportskeeda, Merson shared his thoughts, stating that while he understood the appeal of Saudi Arabia for players like Mohamed Salah, De Bruyne should think twice before considering a move to the Middle East for financial reasons.
“He’s been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and to be honest, I’d be gutted if he went there”, he said on Sportskeeda.
“I can understand if someone like Mohamed Salah were to move to Saudi as that could be a huge coup for the SPL considering his stature in the Arab world but if I’m [Kevin] De Bruyne, I doubt I’d be swayed by a big-money move to the Middle East.”
Merson’s concerns reflect the sentiment that losing a player of De Bruyne’s caliber would undoubtedly impact City.
However, with a promising young talent like Foden waiting in the wings, the club may have a seamless transition plan in place.
