During the recent January transfer window, Manchester City’s back-up goalkeeper Stefan Ortega turned down offers from various clubs looking to secure an exit from the Etihad Stadium. Despite interest from other clubs, Ortega is now preparing for a stint as Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper.

After Ederson’s injury during a match against Liverpool at Anfield, Ortega is set to step in for the next few games, including an FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United and a Premier League match against Arsenal, both to be played at the Etihad Stadium.

Earlier in the year, there were offers from Premier League clubs for Ortega, but he chose to stay with Manchester City. The Athletic’s Sam Lee reported that there was significant interest, both in England and Europe, for Ortega to become a club’s primary goalkeeper.

Nottingham Forest was one of the clubs that saw their approach for Ortega rejected, leading them to sign a goalkeeper from the market on deadline day. Manchester City is currently working on renewing Ortega’s contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the next season.

However, negotiations have hit a roadblock, and Manchester City is doubtful about retaining Ortega beyond the upcoming summer transfer window due to interest from other European clubs. Despite his contentment with life in the northwest of England, Ortega may consider offers that provide him with more playing opportunities.

For now, Ortega is focused on his role as Manchester City’s temporary first-choice goalkeeper and will continue to feature in important matches for the club in the coming weeks.
