West Ham United striker Michail Antonio, who recently praised Phil Foden’s skills, now doubts that Foden will start for England at Euro 2024. Despite facing Foden on multiple occasions, Antonio acknowledges the midfielder’s talent but believes Gareth Southgate has a fixed starting XI that does not include Foden.
Antonio expressed his skepticism about Foden’s starting position for England during an episode of BBC Sounds’ The Footballer’s Football Podcast. He pointed out that Southgate typically sticks to a specific formation and lineup, making it unlikely for Foden to feature in the starting eleven. Antonio highlighted the challenge of fitting Foden into a midfield trio alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, suggesting that Southgate’s tactics may not accommodate Foden’s playing style.
While Antonio considers Foden a strong candidate for the left-wing position, he doubts Foden’s willingness to play in that position. Despite Foden’s standout performances for Manchester City, Southgate’s preference for established players like Harry Maguire and Bukayo Saka may limit Foden’s opportunities in the national team.
Antonio’s observations align with Southgate’s past choices, such as leaving Foden on the bench during the 2022 World Cup. Despite Foden’s versatility and success at the club level, Southgate’s loyalty to certain players could impact Foden’s role in the England squad.
Although Antonio appreciates Foden’s talent, he remains realistic about the competition for places in the England team. As Euro 2024 approaches, Foden may have to settle for a substitute role or find a way to impress Southgate and secure a spot in the starting lineup.
