Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has credited two members of his backroom staff for a sensational set-piece routine that contributed to the team’s victory against Burnley.
The victory, with a 3-1 scoreline and a brace from Julian Alvarez, continued City’s fine form in 2024. Kevin De Bruyne also made his first start for Manchester City since returning from injury and surgery, showing excellent form in his recent appearances for the club.
De Bruyne provided yet another assist on Wednesday night, turning provider for Julian Alvarez’s second goal of the contest to double City’s lead.
Guardiola stressed the importance of set-pieces in modern football and gave credit to assistant manager, Carlos Vicens, and match analyst, Jack Wilson, for their preparation and contribution to the outstanding routine that led to the second goal against Burnley.
Guardiola emphasized that he is not directly involved in set-piece preparation, acknowledging the expertise of Vicens and Wilson in this aspect of the game.
“Today in modern football, the set-pieces are important,” Guardiola said. “We won the FA Cup (tie) against Spurs with a corner, and today we prepared with Carlos (Vicens, assistant manager) and Jack (Wilson, match analyst).”
He continued, “I’m not involved in anything about the set-pieces because I’m not good or the other ones are better, or I don’t have time I would say. We were preparing things and the corners sometimes, and every team does, it’s not just us or because we are different to the others.
He also praised Kevin De Bruyne and Julian Alvarez for their execution of the routine. Vicens, who was expected to leave Manchester City at the end of the 2021/22 season, decided to remain alongside Guardiola and is now a trusted member of the coaching staff.
The reports around the club indicated that Vicens earned the respect of the squad through his clear and concise set-piece instructions during the 2021/22 season. His decision to stay and the recognition of his contributions are a testament to his value to the team.
Overall, Guardiola’s acknowledgment of the behind-the-scenes work of his staff sheds light on the teamwork and preparation that goes into the success of the team, beyond the performances on the pitch.
Vicens and Wilson’s contributions demonstrate the importance of specialized expertise and attention to detail in modern football, complementing the talents of the players on the field.
This collaborative approach and recognition of the wider team’s efforts are crucial in City’s pursuit of continued success.
