The return of Kevin De Bruyne has given Manchester City fans something to cheer for. After recently making his comeback from injury, the Belgian midfielder has been making a few appearances off the bench for City following hamstring surgery. However, fans are now eagerly anticipating his return to the starting XI.
De Bruyne suffered the injury during the club’s first Premier League game of the season against Burnley back in August. Now, as City gears up to face Burnley again in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium this Wednesday, speculation is rife that De Bruyne could be set to start against the Clarets.
Currently, there has been intrigue around whether Phil Foden may miss out if Pep Guardiola decides to bring De Bruyne in for his first start since returning. Paul Merson has suggested that Foden could potentially be dropped for De Bruyne.
He told Sportskeeda: “They don’t really need him for a winnable home game against Burnley, so I think it’s best if he comes off against tired legs in the second half to get some game time under his belt.
“If De Bruyne does start, I think Phil Foden will be the one to miss out, as Bernardo Silva is too good a player for Guardiola to leave out of the starting XI.”
City are the heavy favorites to win on Wednesday, with Burnley fighting to avoid relegation. Following their Club World Cup campaign, City have regained their form, and a win seems likely. However, a professional display will be required, as Burnley is sure to put up a tough fight.
Pep Guardiola has stated that De Bruyne is ready to play 90 minutes, meaning that he is in contention to start. Merson believes that Foden could drop to the bench if De Bruyne starts, as Bernardo Silva is too good to leave out of the starting XI.
It remains to be seen if De Bruyne’s return may come at the expense of Foden. But with De Bruyne now back in the mix, it is a possibility that Foden could be rested against Burnley. Considering Foden’s consistent and impressive performances this season, it will be interesting to see how Guardiola manages the situation.
As City fans wait with bated breath for the teamsheet on Wednesday, the return of De Bruyne brings excitement and anticipation for what could be a remarkable comeback.
