Nathan Ake has expressed his admiration for departing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after years of competing with the Anfield club. Since joining Manchester City from Bournemouth in 2020, Ake has been part of thrilling Premier League title races with Klopp’s Liverpool side, emerging victorious in several of them.

With the announcement of Klopp’s departure at the end of the season, many at Manchester City have begun reflecting on the intense battles with the Merseyside club.

Last week, Klopp announced his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the current campaign, citing a lack of energy to remain on the touchline after an emotional nine-year tenure at the club. In an interview with Manchester World following the news, Ake expressed his respect for Klopp and his contributions to the club and the Premier League.

“It was a bit of a shock for everyone,” Ake said. “He’s a very, very good manager and has done so well for the club and for the Premier League. He will be a big miss. It didn’t change how we played, we focus on ourselves. We’ve pushed each other for however many years. Every time they do well we want to do better. Obviously it’s been a good challenge over the last few years.”

Ake also acknowledged Liverpool’s strong performance this season, noting that they are a formidable opponent and will continue to be so. He described Klopp’s departure as a loss to the Premier League and expressed his shock at the news.

At the point of the season, Klopp’s team is five points ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League title race, but the Etihad club has a game in hand over their rivals. The next challenge for Manchester City is a match against Burnley, led by club legend Vincent Kompany, at the Etihad Stadium.

Overall, Ake’s comments reflect his appreciation for the battles with Liverpool under Klopp’s management and his recognition of the impact that Klopp has had on both Liverpool and the Premier League as a whole.
