Kalvin Phillips reportedly has no desire to leave Manchester City this summer, with the England international linked with a move to Liverpool.
The 27-year-old may have won three winners’ medals last season. But it is safe to say that his career since leaving Elland Road for the Etihad last summer has not gone according to plan.
It cost City £42 million to secure his services from the Yorkshire outfit, but he failed to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans last term. The imperious Rodri remained untouchable in the primary holding midfield role.
The former Leeds United man made just four starts in all competitions. In total, he registered 21 appearances, with the remaining 17 coming as a substitute, leading to intense rumours about his imminent future at the club beyond this summer.
City are even reportedly willing to send the midfielder out on loan for the 2023-24 campaign in an effort to revive his career, with Liverpool are considering a move for the England international.
However, according to the Daily Mail, the 27-year-old midfielder does not want to depart the Etihad Stadium despite interest from Liverpool as well as City closing in on the signing of Matheus Nunes.
The Wolves star is expected to provide short-term cover for Kevin De Bruyne as well as competition in the midfield for Pep Guardiola’s side, which could force Phillips even further down the pecking order.
As a result, Phillips could be pushing himself into a corner by staying at City rather than moving on this summer.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
@blastedup: “He’s a waste of space, he should consider leaving to save his career now”
@xerfurr12: “He’s genuinely ruining his career”
@hayankhan1312: “With all our players returning.. Bernardo & stones. Plus Doku. He doesn’t have an atom of chance.”
@DazzlingDias4: “Second season Phillips will come good not an England international for nothing+ remember second season Grealish”
@MRifqiFarisi: “This season or never. This is your chance, Kalvin”
@Rato Zondi: “I want him to succeed so badly here. I really don’t get why some fans want him gone after one season that he was injured in. City players always take a season to settle in. There’s a player in there and I’m willing to get behind him.”
@mxcity16: “I wish that by the end of next szn he proves us wrong and we say thank god we didn’t sell him. But what am i supposed to trust? He shows no positive signs, i’m not talking about starting, but a SUB?”
@PepDegree: “I respect the fact he wants to stay and fight but it’s just going to be another zinchenko situation where he’ll never be good enough to be a starter but comes on when he’s required. He’s not making Rodri better by being in squad. Rodri can get even better with right competition..”
@goatersmotors: “You have to question this guy’s mentality at this point. It’s so unbelievably obvious he’s not getting off this bench, and he’s going further down the pecking order daily. Just wants to sit on his juicy contract (which he’s entitled to do), just a bit embarrassing”
@SilkyCyrus_74: “Its literally the euros in the summer, if he dont play club games he’s not gonna start for England. So for his own career he should leave”
@misfermo30: “Has until December to prove me wrong. Would like him to leave now but I understand if he doesn’t want to. Other than that he’s going down as the worst transfer in the Sheikh era”
