Matheus Nunes has stopped training with Wolves and asked to leave the club amid interest from Manchester City, according to reports.
City want to sign Nunes before the summer transfer market closes on Friday night, but have had an offer worth €55million (£47million) rejected by Wolves for the player.
The Molineux club are reportedly determined to stand firm unless a proposal meets their valuation.
Pep Guardiola’s side are eager to add to their midfield having seen Ilkay Gundogan depart for Barcelona this summer and Kevin De Bruyne pick up a hamstring injury which required surgery that could see him spend up to four months out.
Emerging as a top target for Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning Cityzens, Wolves’ number 27 looks set to become the next player to move to the Etihad.
Despite turning down Manchester City’s opening offer, leading transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Wolves have received an improved offer of around €60 million from the Premier League champions.
The Sky Blues are ‘optimistic’ about making the 24-year-old their fourth addition of the summer, having previously agreed personal terms with the player.
Romano isn’t the only high-profile journalist reporting on Nunes to Manchester City though. The Athletic’s David Ornstein has also dropped an update. The well-respected journalist claims the 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder is refusing to train with his parent club in an attempt to force through a transfer.
