Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Ilkay Gundogan is now expected to join Barcelona on a free transfer this summer.

The 32-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and Barcelona are growing increasingly confident that they can lure him to Nou Camp in the summer.

The Germany international can walk away from the Premier League champions on a free transfer at the end of the season as things stand.

The Premier League champions do not want to lose him this summer, with manager Pep Guardiola a big admirer of Gundogan’s experience, leadership and consistency.

It is unclear whether Man City intend to tie Gundogan down to a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, but there has not been a breakthrough in any negotiations behind the scenes.

Barca boss Xavi is believed to be pushing for the Blaugrana to bring Gundogan to Camp Nou this summer, having personally contacted the former Borussia Dortmund man to discuss a switch.

The La Liga leader have seemingly been handed a significant boost in their pursuit of a cut-price deal, as Journalist Sique Rodríguez claims that Ilkay Gundogan wants to join Barcelona.

The report claims that Man City believe he will leave at the end of the season and would be Xavi’s preferred option after ruling out a possible arrival of Bernardo Silva.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
