Manchester City attempted a late loan offer for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison before the deadline closed.
Maddison, who is also a target for Newcastle United, will have just 12 months to run on his contract at the King Power in the summer and Leicester know that it could be their final opportunity to secure a fee that justifies the talent he possesses.
City could be in need of a midfield revamp in the coming transfer window with the futures of Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva up in the air.
The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that Pep Guardiola is keen to freshen up his squad and add more goals to his side from midfield with Maddison on a list of targets that also include Jude Bellingham.
The report also states that Maddison is keen to test himself at the elite level with Man City the perfect place to do as they search for their fifth title in six seasons this term.
As highlighted by the report, James Maddison will soon be entering the final 12 months of his £100,000-a-week contract at Leicester City and has so far shown ‘no inclination’ to sign an extension.
According to journalist Sam Lee on the Why Always Us podcast, Manchester City attempted to sign Maddison late in the window with a loan offer with an option to buy.
Sam Lee claims Man City presented a loan offer with an option to buy for James Maddison but Leicester City rejected the deal.
Understandably, Leicester weren’t interested, with Maddison being their best player and leaving little time and no transfer fee for them to find a replacement.
Maddison is one of the main reasons that Leicester have managed to drag themselves out of the relegation zone this season. Brendan Rodgers’ side were struggling at the foot of the Premier League table in the opening few months of the season but have managed to turn it around recently.
If Leicester don’t manage to finish in Europe this season, then you’d imagine Maddison will be looking to join a bigger club.
