Joao Cancelo sends message to fans after “schoolboy defending” that led to Mohamed Salah scoring against Manchester City.
Cancelo was left marking Salah one-on-one when goalkeeper Alisson sent a long ball forward with 14 minutes left to play at Anfield.
The City fullback attempted to cut-out the pass forward but missed the ball, allowing Salah to sprint away.
Salah stayed cool and slotted the ball past Ederson, handing Liverpool a vital three points
The former Juventus man wasn’t at his best for City against Liverpool but took responsibility for his error. At the end of the game, cameras spotted Cancelo patting his chest and mouthing, “My fault”.
On Sky Sports, former Manchester United captain Roy Keane said Cancelo’s attempt to win the ball was “schoolboy defending”.
Meanwhile Jamie Carragher compared Cancelo to Trent Alexander-Arnold, claiming he is “not a good defender”.
“Cancelo is like Trent, he’s not a good defender, Trent isn’t,” the Liverpool legend stated.
“The reason why we’re being more critical is because he’s being exposed more. He’s not all of a sudden became a worse defender and it’s the same with Cancelo, if he had less protection, you’d see that more often.”
And Cancelo took to Instagram and express his feelings stating “Every mistake you make is progress”.
This Joao Cancelo’s poor defending received criticism online from some fans, while others were quick to defend the Portuguese as he has been brilliant for us on many occasions.

“Don’t understand some of the reactionary slander being aimed at Cancelo. The man has been brilliant for us on many occasions. Surely he’s earned himself some slack.”
