Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports that Liverpool are a “million miles” away from Manchester City at this early stage, after losing to Manchester United on Monday night – condemning them to just two points from a possible nine.
Liverpool have made a woeful start to the Premier League campaign. Limping to a point against Fulham on the opening day was followed by a straight red card and a moment of madness from Darwin Nunez against Palace.
It saw Liverpool, again, make do with a point. Their first tough test came against an out-of-form Manchester United, and they suffered a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford cancelled out Mo Salah’s strike.
It sees Liverpool already surrender a five-point lead to last season’s Premier League champions, Manchester City. Early season predictions of Liverpool going toe to toe once again for the title look some way off, judging by their form.
Yes, Liverpool have numerous injury issues. But even with the players they have, they should have won their first two games and avoided defeat at Manchester United. Carragher thinks they are miles off Manchester City right now.
“Even at this stage, the points gap feels big, with the quality of Man City. You just don’t expect a really poor start from this Liverpool team – they set such high standards but they’re a million miles from them. They have to fix it quickly.”
Liverpool have never failed to win at least one of their opening three games during his tenure, and a total of just two points from nine available leaves them five points behind defending champions Manchester City and seven adrift of leaders Arsenal.
These Carragher’s comments were shared on Twitter and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“3 games in 5 point difference. People are so fickle if they think anything is decided now regardless of form and recent results. We need to take advantage of this because it’ll be us and Liverpool on top again come May..”
