Ilkay Gundogan says Liverpool have played an incredible season after he led Manchester City to an incredible comeback on the final day of the season to secure the Premier League title.
Guardiola’s men overturned a two-goal deficit at the Etihad Stadium, scoring three times in five minutes late on in the match to snatch top spot.
Steven Gerrard’s men put Liverpool in dreamland after goals from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho threatened to take glory to Merseyside, though the Sky Blues rallied to ensure their title fate remained in their hands.
One of the players who helped kick-start City’s revival was Gundogan, who was subbed on in the 68th minute of the match and found the back of the net twice in quick succession to complete a vital turnaround for the hosts.
The former Borussia Dortmund star was also on target on the final day of the 2018/19 season, sealing a 4-1 win to ensure Liverpool missed out on the title by a single point.
The Sky Blues have, again, taken the title away from Klopp’s men in cruel circumstances but a great sense of respect remains regarding how Liverpool continue to push City to their maximum. Commenting on City’s comeback win over Villa, Gundogan told Sky Sports: “It was an unbelievable game. It was fantastic.
“Honestly, after going 2-0 down, the chances were very small. We had to do simple things again in the best possible way. It was more of a negative one than a positive one. It was about getting that goal and we knew it would be one our side to be able to score three goals. We’re fans at the end of the day. These are days that you look back too.
“If Liverpool would not be there and play the way they do, I don’t think the league could be that attractive. They played an incredible season and we pushed each other to the limit.
“Even though it’s a sad day for them, we need to appreciate what they’ve done. We’re looking forward to competing with them against next season.”
