Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Arsenal are set to offer manager Mikel Arteta a new contract before the end of the season to ward off interest from the Premier League leaders.
Arteta was City’s assistant manager for over three years, working closely with Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff. There was a view the Spaniard could be his successor, but his understandable switch to become Arsenal manager shelved that talk.
The 39-year-old has been in charge at the Emirates for two years after replacing Unai Emery in December 2019. Reports suggest Manchester City are eyeing him to replace Pep Guardiola when his compatriot finally leaves City.
According to Matt Hughes in the Daily Mail, Arsenal are conscious that the expiry date of Mikel Arteta’s current contract in summer 2023 coincides with Pep Guardiola’s current planned departure date at Manchester City.
The report states that Guardiola’s deal at the Etihad Stadium is likewise due to end next year and the Citizens feel Arteta could replace the 51-year-old.
Arteta has impressed Arsenal staff since replacing Unai Emery as their head coach in 2019. They admire how the former Everton midfielder has built his side around Hale End products Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe. So, club staff are confident he is taking them in the right direction.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

Neither Peps leaving City. Nor Arteta leaving Arsenal. They’ll both extend.
