Barcelona midfielder mainstay Frenkie de Jong has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Manchester City and Bayern Munich
The 24-year-old midfielder has established himself as first-team regular since his arrival in 2019, making a total of 104 appearances in all competitions.
However, the Netherlands international is currently part of an under-performing side at a time when further sales will need to be made in the upcoming transfer windows.
According to a report from Italian publication Calciomercato, that has led to the likes of City and Bayern beginning to monitoring any developments with De Jong.
A separate report from ESPN say with Barcelona’s interest in Raheem Sterling, their move for the Englishman could “add some fuel to the fire” in City’s pursuit of the 24-year-old.
While the player has a contract at Camp Nou until 2026, the Catalan giants are expected to be open to a sale at the right price.
However, considering that the Netherlands international is contracted with Barcelona till the summer of 2026, any move would require both interested parties to shell out a massive sum to prize him away from Camp Nou.
De Jong suffered a hamstring injury during the 2-1 El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid at the weekend but the reports claim the Dutchman could replace midfielder general Fernandinho with the 36-year-old edging towards the end of his current deal.
City could view De Jong as a potential replacement for Fernandinho as he could offer more competition in the middle of the pitch. He would make a fine signing for the the Cityzens for the present and the future.
