Fans are reacting to Ruben Dias’s performance in Manchester City’s 2:0 Carabao Semi Final win over Manchester United by saying he’s now the Premier League’s top centre-back.
The Portugal international, signed from Benfica for over £60 million in September. Some were bemused with that decision, but have been proven right so far as the Portuguese international has quickly found his feet in City’s improving backline turning in some huge displays since his arrival.
In the first half-hour of this end-to-end game, Ruben Dias blocked a fierce goal-bound Marcus Rashford shot with a superb sliding tackle and made vital last-man interceptions to stop United’s counter-attacking. His determination set the tone for a resolute rearguard display alongside John Stones who was also throwing himself into tackles to preserve City’s goal.
Stones’ recent revival no doubt owes something to the performances of his new partner, who was outstanding once again here. Ruben Dias won 3/3 tackles, made five recoveries and six clearances, and generally dominated a United frontline that has been in fine form of late.
Pep Guardiola’s side had been known for leaking goals last season but this term they have the Premier League’s best defensive record: just 13 goals conceded in 15 matches, and Dias deserved an enormous amount of credit for that.
City fans as usual have been hailing Dias following his performance against Manchester United, branding him ‘immense’ and a ‘monster’ whilst comparing him to Vincent Kompany thanks to his leadership ability.
Here’s what some of them had to say on Twitter…
Absolute tank.🤩 No other words needed.
