Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol asserts that the only way to advance to the semi-final stage of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday is by conquering Real Madrid at Etihad Stadium.
For the third consecutive season, the Cityzens will host the Spanish giants at the Etihad Stadium, aiming to defeat them and keep their dream of winning a back-to-back Champions League trophy alive.
In their previous encounter at the venue, Manchester City humiliated Real Madrid with a 4-0 victory. However, the upcoming match on Wednesday is anticipated to be a challenging one for both teams. Gvardiol acknowledged that it will be tough to overcome the 14-time Champions.
The defender made it clear that Manchester City does not fear their opponents’ history in the competition. He stressed that giving in to fear would make them vulnerable against Real Madrid.
“We are going to face Real Madrid, the kings of this competition but if you ask me, there is no fear,” he said via The Sun. He also added, “If you’re afraid of trying and doing something, it’s better to watch it on TV.”
Manchester City clinched the UEFA Champions League title for the first time in their history last season. Despite this, Gvardiol is confident in their ability to secure another victory this season, with the goal of lifting the trophy once again by defeating Real Madrid as part of their strategy.
“We want to win the cup. If you want to go through then you need to beat Real Madrid. In the Champions League if we want to win it we have to face the best teams.”
The first leg match at Santiago Bernabeu ended in a 3-3 draw. The Croatian footballer scored a remarkable goal to give his team a 3-2 lead, but Real Madrid managed to equalize towards the end of the game.
