Manchester City’s full-back Joao Cancelo is once again being targeted by FC Barcelona for a potential transfer after a breakdown in relations with manager Pep Guardiola led to him moving on loan to Bayern Munich last season. Cancelo has not been a regular feature in City’s lineup since the 2022/23 season, and despite returning for pre-season, he finalized a loan move to Barcelona for another season.
Reports suggest that Barcelona is working on bringing Cancelo on loan again with a mandatory option to buy, but there are some within the club who are questioning the potential deal after Cancelo’s impressive performance against Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester City, on the other hand, are unlikely to welcome Cancelo back into the first-team due to squad harmony and the strong defensive performances in his absence.
While City may still strengthen their right-back position in the summer, they are focused on keeping Cancelo away from the club and could look to integrate young talent like Yan Couto instead. With Cancelo’s future uncertain, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will be successful in their pursuit of the out-of-favour defender.
