Pep Guardiola recently reflected on the challenges of managing top clubs like Manchester City, drawing comparisons to his past experiences at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Guardiola took over as City’s manager in the 2016/17 season and has since won numerous trophies, including five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and a Champions League.
In a press conference, Guardiola discussed the high demands placed on managers at elite clubs. He emphasized that every manager handles these pressures differently, experiencing both ups and downs along the way.
Guardiola acknowledged the responsibility and trust that comes with representing a club and admitted that success can determine whether a manager stays for a longer or shorter period.
Despite hinting at possibly extending his contract beyond 2024/25, Guardiola admitted that he was surprised by how long he has stayed at Manchester City compared to his time at Barcelona.
The Spaniard highlighted the unique circumstances that influence a manager’s tenure at a club, noting that winning games can lead to a longer stay while losses can result in dismissal.
He said: “Normally you stay shorter when you don’t win games and they sack you. Normally that happens, but if you win games and you are happy, you can stay longer.
“I was in Barcelona and I was really, really tired and left, and here I stayed longer than I was thinking when I arrived. I think every case is different.”
Currently, Manchester City is competing for multiple trophies this season, sitting in a close second place in the Premier League behind Arsenal and still active in the FA Cup and Champions League.
Guardiola’s team is in a strong position to add more silverware to their collection, showcasing the manager’s ability to sustain success at the highest level.
