Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided insight into how Kevin De Bruyne sustained his latest injury setback, resulting in his withdrawal from Belgium’s international fixtures.
The 32-year-old attacking midfielder was ruled out due to a ‘minor groin injury,’ raising concerns about his availability for the club’s upcoming crucial matches.
Manchester City is set to face Newcastle and Arsenal in the Premier League, with De Bruyne’s absence potentially impacting the team’s chances of success in these fixtures.
Guardiola disclosed that De Bruyne likely picked up the injury during the recent match against Liverpool, where he played through some discomfort.
“Well he’s not ready,” Guardiola began on De Bruyne, pointing towards this weekend’s meeting with Eddie Howe’s side at the Etihad Stadium. “He already played in Anfield with some problems, but he’s getting better.
“He’s not ready for tomorrow and I’m pretty sure of that. So we spoke with the manager of Belgium, Domenico Tedesco, and he decided and that’s why I’m grateful because he didn’t feel good and can recover for the last part of the season.”
The international break presents an opportunity for Manchester City to prioritize the recovery of key players like De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, and Ederson.
Grealish, who has been dealing with a recurring groin issue, has been granted extra time off to ensure full recuperation. His availability for the match against Arsenal will depend on the progress he makes during the break.
Guardiola acknowledged the significance of keeping key players fit for the team’s trophy-winning aspirations. The break from competitive duties will allow the players to focus on their recovery and return to full fitness for the crucial matches ahead.
Manchester City’s success in the remaining season will depend on the management of player injuries and the timely return of key contributors like De Bruyne and Grealish.
