Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Rodri, suggesting that the Manchester City midfielder could be remembered as the greatest defensive midfielder in Premier League history.
Former player Jamie O’Hara even went as far as to claim that Rodri is superior to N’Golo Kante, a player widely regarded as one of the best holding midfielders of all time.
Rodri’s impact at City has been so significant that even John Obi Mikel stated that he has surpassed the likes of Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane.
However, there are still some who believe that legendary players like Vieira and Keane, who were not just great players but iconic captains as well, hold a higher status than Rodri.
While Ferdinand doesn’t believe Rodri is currently the greatest number six in Premier League history, he thinks the Spanish midfielder has the potential to be the undisputed best.
“I think he’s definitely in the conversation. He could be. His importance to this Man City team is the definitive factor. The best ones I played with were [Michael] Carrick and Owen Hargreaves.”
“But I think sheer importance to his team, when he’s out of the team, he gets beat”, he said on TNT Sports.
As City are favorites in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup, there is speculation about whether they can achieve back-to-back trebles, a feat that has never been accomplished.
Even if they win the double, it is possible that Ferdinand and others may acknowledge Rodri as the best holding midfielder in Premier League history.
Rodri’s contributions to City and his potential to shape the team’s success further cement his status as one of the best in the league.
However, debates about his place compared to retired greats will continue among fans and pundits. Ultimately, Rodri’s legacy as a top defensive midfielder in the Premier League could be solidified by his performances on the field.
