Joleon Lescott, a former Manchester City player, shared his thoughts on the recent match between Manchester City and Liverpool, stating that one particular City player caused Virgil van Dijk more trouble than Erling Haaland did.

The game ended in a draw, with both teams having opportunities to clinch a victory. Despite the hype surrounding Erling Haaland, Lescott pointed out that Van Dijk’s performance against Phil Foden was more impressive.

Speaking on LiveScore on TikTok, Lescott praised Van Dijk for his solid performance and highlighted his ability to tackle Foden, a skillful dribbler.

While Erling Haaland received criticism for not scoring in the match, Lescott defended him by acknowledging his contribution to the team’s build-up play.

Lescott said: “He was solid, very solid.

“Erling Haaland scenario I believe was overhyped for me, because that’s not Erling Haaland’s strength.

“The most impressive bit is him getting back and tackling Phil Foden, who is very comfortable dribbling.

“They’re the moments I was looking at thinking, yeah Virgil’s in control of a lot.

“For me, that was more impressive than the one-v-one because Erling is isolated.

“There’s players behind him closing him down, that isn’t his strength. That’s the thing he’s probably least comfortable in front of goal.

“He definitely did well, controlled it. Even though he got a shot off, you still feel Virgil was in control.

“Overall game, his dominance, there were more incidents with Phil and more dribblers than Haaland.”

Overall, Lescott’s analysis sheds light on the nuanced performances of both Van Dijk and Haaland in the high-stakes game. While Haaland may not have found the back of the net, his involvement in the team’s strategic play was noted.

Lescott’s insights provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics at play during the match and offer a different perspective on evaluating player performances.
