Michael Owen has revealed his preference between Erling Haaland and Harry Kane as strikers. Haaland scored his 29th goal of the season in Manchester City’s 3-1 Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen, taking his tally to 81 goals in 85 games for the club. However, Kane has been equally impressive with 33 goals and 9 assists in 33 games since joining Bayern Munich.

City signed Haaland in 2022 after failing to secure Kane from Tottenham the previous year. Owen expressed his choice, stating that in a finishing contest, he would choose Kane over Haaland. Despite Haaland’s impressive goal-scoring record, Owen believes he has underperformed in terms of expected goals (xG).

Speaking on TNT Sports, Owen said: “If my life depended on it, in a finishing contest, I would have Harry Kane.

“I would have a few strikers ahead of Haaland, I must admit.

“He scores massive goals, so you’ve got to be careful what you say, because you can be made to look foolish with the numbers he scores. It’s incredible.

“Haaland’s [xG] is below par. He should have scored about three more in the Premier League, he should have scored an extra goal in the Champions League, and that’s before you look at cup competitions.

“He’s below what you would expect on chances he’s been given this season.”

The Norwegian striker has missed 12 games due to injury, but City is satisfied with their choice as they got a younger, lethal striker for a lower price. Despite Haaland’s recent misses, City remains confident in his ability to find the back of the net consistently.

Looking at the statistics, Haaland could have had even more goals if he had played in all the missed games. City made the right decision in signing Haaland, as he has proven to be just as lethal as Kane for half the price.

In conclusion, Owen’s preference for Kane over Haaland in terms of finishing ability highlights the debate between the two world-class strikers. City is content with their choice and remains optimistic about Haaland’s future performances on the pitch.
