Manchester City has shown interest in bringing back Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, as reported by AS. The Madrid-based publication has stated that Luiz is among three midfielders on City’s shortlist for the upcoming transfer window. Alongside Luiz, the Premier League champions are also monitoring Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich and Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle.
Currently, Guimaraes seems to be City’s top target, with a £100m release clause in his contract. However, AS suggests that City might face competition from Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United for Guimaraes, making negotiations more complex.
Luiz had attracted interest from Arsenal in the past, with the Gunners making multiple bids for him before the closure of the August 2022 transfer window. Despite Arsenal’s attempts to secure Luiz’s services for around £25m, Aston Villa managed to keep him by extending his contract until 2026.
City previously had a buyback clause on Luiz when they sold him to Villa in 2019 for £25m. However, this clause expired three years ago, meaning City will have to negotiate a new deal to bring Luiz back to the Etihad Stadium. Villa reportedly values Luiz at around £100m, the same amount as Guimaraes.
AS has reported that City has already engaged in discussions with Guimaraes’ representatives, indicating their preference for him. Nonetheless, City’s decision on their transfer target may vary before the summer window opens.
