In a thrilling match between Manchester City and Liverpool, John Stones scored the first goal for City from a corner, only for Liverpool to equalize through an Alexis Mac Allister penalty.
Despite both teams having numerous opportunities to win, the match ended in a draw, shaking up the Premier League title race.
Stones acknowledged the quality of Kevin De Bruyne’s cross that set up his goal, praising the training ground work that went into the set piece.
De Bruyne, despite adding another assist to his impressive tally, had a frustrating game as he was well-marshalled by Liverpool and made uncharacteristic mistakes, leading to his substitution by Guardiola.
Mateo Kovacic, his replacement, provided the composure in possession that City needed to regain control of the match.
This performance was perhaps Kovacic’s best since joining City and showcased his ability to step into the role left by Ilkay Gundogan. Hopefully, Kovacic can continue this form while De Bruyne regains his usual influence on the pitch.
Stones expressed his happiness at contributing at the other end of the pitch and hoped to score more goals in the future.
Speaking to City’s in-house media, Stones said: “Straight from the training ground.
“Big credit to the guys who put the set pieces together and Kevin [De Bruyne] for the quality of putting it in there.
“They put their ideas across to us and we worked on it in training yesterday and it came off which was great.
“I’m happy and pleased I got on the scoresheet.
“I’ve been trying hard to contribute up the other end of the pitch and it’s nice for me – a first one of the
season and hopefully I can get some more now.”
The draw between City and Liverpool marked the end of an era-defining rivalry between Guardiola and Klopp, leaving fans on the edge of their seats with the intensity of the match.
