Former Liverpool defender and football pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester City would welcome a draw against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals. The two clubs have a history of facing each other in Europe’s top competition, with City only managing one win against the Blaugrana in six encounters.
In the past, Barcelona, led by the likes of Lionel Messi, were considered one of the best teams in Europe, while City lagged behind in terms of quality. However, the tables have turned, with City now dominating European football while Barcelona has declined from their previous heights.
Carragher suggests that with City being the favorites to win the Champions League again, it would be a surprise if Barcelona were to come out on top.
“When you think of one of the biggest names there, Barcelona, where they are right now, I think that’d be a decent draw for somebody, say a Manchester City or an Arsenal or PSG.”
“I think if they got Barcelona, they’d be pleased”, he said on CBS Sports.
From Carragher’s perspective, City would have the upper hand in a matchup against Barcelona. City boasts a squad of top-quality players who would be starters in any world XI, while their manager, Pep Guardiola, is widely regarded as one of the best in the world. In comparison, Barcelona, under new manager Xavi, may struggle to match City’s prowess in the competition.
Recent history also favors City, as they have reached multiple Champions League finals and semi-finals in the past few years, while Barcelona has struggled to replicate their past successes in the competition. As a result, Carragher believes that City would see a draw against Barcelona as a favorable outcome in the Champions League quarter-finals.
