Heading into the first international break of 2024, Gareth Southgate has revealed his England squad for the upcoming fixtures.

As preparations for Euro 2024 intensify, the Three Lions are set to play friendlies against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley next week.

Among the players selected are Manchester City stalwarts Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden, along with former City player Cole Palmer.

However, one notable absence from the squad is Kalvin Phillips, who has been dropped due to ongoing struggles with form.

Despite Southgate’s high regard for Phillips, the midfielder’s lack of playing time and lackluster performances for both City and on loan at West Ham led to his exclusion from the squad.

Speaking in a press conference, Southgate emphasized the importance of Phillips finding his rhythm and regaining confidence to earn a spot back in the national team.

Southgate said: “I think he knows exactly what we think of him.

“I think we’ve shown that support. A good version of him is an important player for us.

“And that’s why we’ve supported him as we have. We don’t have many players of that profile.

“So unfortunately his form just hasn’t been good enough. I’ve spoken to him about that. He understands.

“He’s got all the attributes to force his way back in and we’re really keen for him to do that.

“I said towards the end of last year when we were picking squads, if he continued not play at City that was going to be a problem.

“He just needs to find that rhythm and confidence because there’s an outstanding player in there and I’m sure he’ll find that.”

While Phillips’ chances of making it to Euro 2024 currently appear slim, Southgate has left the door open for a potential comeback if he can rediscover his best form at West Ham.

With England lacking depth in defensive midfield, Phillips’ past contributions and skillset could still prove valuable for the team.

As Southgate offers hope for Phillips’s return, the midfielder now faces the challenge of proving himself and earning a spot in the squad for the upcoming tournament.

Time will tell if Phillips can overcome his struggles and make a triumphant comeback to the England squad.
