Manchester City’s Argentine forward Dario Sarmiento, who joined the club in 2021, had his work permit application rejected by a Home Office commission. This means that he will be unable to play for Manchester City’s first team. Sarmiento had ambitions of playing for the first team, but factors outside of his control have hindered his progress.

Sarmiento’s situation mirrors that of Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz, who faced a similar work permit issue during his time at Manchester City. Despite the setback, Luiz was able to continue his development and has since become a successful player at Aston Villa, attracting interest from top European clubs such as Arsenal. Some speculate that Manchester City may come back in for Luiz, as they once saw him as a potential star for their squad under Pep Guardiola.

The Football Association declined to comment on Sarmiento’s situation after his work permit application was rejected. This setback serves as a reminder of the challenges that South American players face when trying to break into the English football system, despite their talent and potential.
