Former Manchester City player and pundit Paul Dickov has praised Josko Gvardiol for his performances at the club, especially after returning from injury in the FA Cup game against Newcastle United.
Dickov highlighted Gvardiol’s talent and potential, emphasizing that the young Croatian defender has been fantastic despite his age and the adjustment period required at a club like City.
City signed Gvardiol for £77m from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window, and he has since made 28 appearances for the team across all competitions.
With 18 Premier League appearances, Gvardiol has been an effective defensive presence, boasting impressive statistics in successful tackles, blocks, and interceptions.
During a livestream on the club’s YouTube channel, Dickov expressed his admiration for Gvardiol’s progress and growth on the pitch, noting that the defender was just starting to find his rhythm before his injury setback.
He said: “He’s been fantastic, I think people forget how young he is and how, historically, it can take players time to settle at Man City, especially playing the full-back positions because we play it completely differently to how everybody else does and he’s a centre-half by trade.
“The injury came at an unfortunate time, I felt, because I thought he was just finding his feet and he was getting better and better all the time.
“From now on until the end of the season, 10 league games, a few more cup games, Champions League games as well, everybody is going to need to be fighting fit and that could well be the difference, not just the size of the squad but the quality of the squad.”
Gvardiol’s ability to adapt to City’s unique playing style, despite being a natural center-back, has impressed both Dickov and fans.
The hope now is that Gvardiol can stay injury-free and continue to deliver strong performances for the team. With Dickov’s endorsement and support, Gvardiol’s future at Manchester City looks promising, and fans can expect to see more exciting contributions from the talented defender.
