Retired footballer Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester City are the clear frontrunners to win the Champions League following their recent victory over Copenhagen, securing a spot in the quarter-finals.
In a comfortable 3-1 win in the second leg of their last-16 clash, City advanced with a 6-2 aggregate scoreline, showcasing their dominance in the competition.
The first-half goals from Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez, and Erling Haaland sealed the win for City, with Mohamed Elyounoussi managing to score one for Copenhagen in between City’s goals.
Alongside their pursuit of the Premier League title, City will join Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and PSG in the final eight, with the remaining last-16 ties set to conclude soon.
Ferdinand expressed his confidence in City’s ability to emerge victorious over two-legged ties, suggesting that their only vulnerability may be in the final.
“I just don’t see anybody beating them over two legs. Then it depends on who gets in the final,” Ferdinand said on TNT Sports post-match.
“Whoever they are playing against in the final needs that stardust from one or two players who can turn a game on its head, then they have an opportunity, a chance.
“But City, I think they are standout favourites. They are a level above.”
Manager Pep Guardiola praised his team’s consistency in the tournament, emphasizing the progress made by City in recent years.
Reflecting on their journey from initial setbacks to reaching the quarter-finals, Guardiola credited the club’s patience and support for allowing them to develop and compete at a high level in Europe.
Despite facing tough opposition from established clubs, Guardiola expressed confidence in City’s ability to compete effectively, highlighting their consistency and growth in European competitions.
With a strong belief in their capabilities, Guardiola emphasized the importance of patience and time in building a competitive team capable of challenging for top honors.
