Erling Haaland matched a record previously set by Sergio Aguero after his disappointing performance for Manchester City against Chelsea.
At the age of 23, Haaland’s finishing was described as having “a bit of a shocker” by Robbie Mustoe following City’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, a crucial game in the Premier League title race.
Despite his underwhelming display, Pep Guardiola voiced his support for the Norwegian goalscorer, expressing confidence that he will capitalize on his chances in the future.
In the match, Haaland’s heading ability was scrutinized as he missed several key opportunities that came his way in the air, failing to test Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Dorde Petrovic.
In an interview with Sky Sports in October two years ago, Haaland acknowledged that heading had been a significant weakness for him.
The statistical analysis revealed that Haaland became the second Manchester City player besides Sergio Aguero, who did not score a goal despite taking more than nine shots in a game.
Aguero achieved this feat against Manchester United in 2017, and Haaland matched it during the game against Chelsea. Sky Sports Statto disclosed that Haaland’s Expected Goals (xG) during the match were 1.71, a figure that typically translates to scoring at least one or two goals. However, in this match, Haaland failed to find the back of the net, showcasing his missed opportunities.
Despite his immense potential, Haaland’s performance against Chelsea reflected an unwanted record as he joined the likes of Aguero in this regard. Nonetheless, Guardiola’s belief in the young striker’s abilities signals that City fans can expect better performances in the future.
