Alan Shearer has suggested that England manager Gareth Southgate may face a tough decision when it comes to choosing a number 10 player for the national team. The impressive form of Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham has raised the question of who should be given the role.
Foden, who has been playing primarily in the central position for City, excelled in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, forming a strong partnership with Julian Alvarez. He has expressed his desire to continue in this role, and manager Pep Guardiola has largely accommodated this preference.
However, Shearer believes that this situation could become a dilemma for Southgate, as both Foden and Bellingham have made a strong case for themselves. Bellingham, who signed for Real Madrid for a substantial amount, has also been exceptional in the same position.
Foden’s exceptional performances in the Premier League have raised expectations for his role in the national team, but the emergence of Bellingham in a similar position adds complexity to Southgate’s decision-making process. Shearer highlighted this during a podcast, acknowledging that both players’ potential contributions to the national team are exciting.
Both Foden and Bellingham are expected to be key players for England, and Southgate will have to carefully consider their roles in the team. Fortunately, the versatility of both players provides Southgate with various options, with Foden able to play out wide and Bellingham capable of excelling as a number eight or holding midfielder.
While Foden has yet to fully establish himself at the international level, there is hope that he will showcase his abilities for the Three Lions in the upcoming year. With Southgate facing the prospect of integrating both Foden and Bellingham into his team, it will be interesting to see how he manages this potential selection headache.
