Manchester City were stunned to find that their incoming signing, teenage winger Savio, wanted to join Barcelona. The Brazilian player was plying his trade at City Football Group’s other outfit, Girona, on loan. However, the summer transfer window will see him make a switch to Manchester City in a deal worth £25 million, successfully fending off interest from other clubs, according to reports.
The interest shown by Barcelona in Savio was what initiated City to secure his future at the club. It was reported that Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona were willing to pay substantial amounts for the teenager, who has made a significant impact at Girona. Although Barcelona’s sporting director Deco spoke highly of Savio, City managed to act quickly and take the player off their radar.
Notably, Savio’s first option had been to join Barcelona next season, but City’s proactive approach changed that. Director of football Txiki Begiristain’s quick thinking was once again on display as City moved swiftly to secure the talented youngster’s services, in what looks to be yet another transfer masterstroke. City have had a remarkable run in the transfer market in the last decade, positioning themselves well for the future with promising acquisitions.
Similar to the case of Julian Alvarez, Savio is expected to return to Girona on loan. There, he will hope to make the same impact that Alvarez made for City in his debut season. With seven goals and seven assists to his name already, Savio’s imminent arrival has City fans eagerly anticipating his contribution at the Etihad. The upcoming summer looks promising for Manchester City with exciting prospects and acquisitions on the horizon.
