Since leaving Manchester City in 2023, Ilkay Gundogan has had a challenging time at Barcelona. He currently ranks fourth in the La Liga table behind Girona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid. Xavi, the man who signed him, has announced he will be leaving this summer. Despite these challenges, Gundogan is still performing on the pitch and recently achieved something no other player in Europe has done this season. In a game on Saturday, he became the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to register ten key passes.
During Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat to Villarreal, Gundogan remarkably made ten key passes and even scored a goal himself. He currently has four goals and eight assists in 32 appearances across all competitions this season, displaying a strong performance in a struggling side. While he may feel a tinge of regret for leaving Manchester City as they secure silverware, he made his decision to chase his dream of playing for Barcelona.
Gundogan expressed his high regard for Barcelona as it had always been his dream to play for the club. He stated, “I always wanted to play for Barcelona one day. This summer was my chance and I wanted to make it happen.” Despite having a better chance of winning silverware at Manchester City, it’s understandable why Gundogan departed for Barcelona.
Overall, while Gundogan has faced challenges at Barcelona, his aspirations and desire to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing for the club have ultimately led to his decision. He still aims to make an impact and improve as a player at his new club.
