Manchester City made a rare move on this day six years ago when they signed Aymeric Laporte for £57 million from Athletic Bilbao and became the club’s record signing at the time. Laporte was known for being a ball-playing defender and was seen as a big coup for the team as Pep Guardiola wanted a side that was good at building from the back.
Laporte quickly impressed at City, making 13 appearances in his first half-season and 51 appearances in his first full season, establishing himself as a key player. However, in the 2019/20 season, he suffered a knee injury that limited him to 20 appearances. Despite his injuries, Laporte made a total of 180 appearances and scored 12 goals for City.
Last summer, Laporte left the club and joined Al Nassr on a £23.5 million deal after winning 13 trophies with City. He had not been a regular in the side, and the arrival of new defenders further decreased his playing time. Laporte was a top player for City and was considered one of the best ball-playing defenders in recent Premier League history. He also had a great personality, and fans enjoyed his behind-the-scenes content.
Although he left the club, Laporte still holds a special place in the hearts of City fans. He sent a heartfelt message to the fans on social media recently in response to the anniversary of his signing:
“And what an adventure it was. Thanks for the great memories and the warm messages from the fans, really appreciated.”
City and the fans still hold a place in Laporte’s heart, and his time at the club is remembered fondly.
