It appears that Manchester City has lost the opportunity to sign Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall, as reports suggest he is now in Barcelona finalizing a transfer to the Spanish giants.
Last week, it was reported that City had entered the race to sign the 17-year-old Djurgardens starlet, joining Barcelona in the pursuit. The club had even sent scouts to watch Bergvall play, expressing interest in signing him. However, it now seems that this potential deal will not materialize, as Barcelona appears to have taken the lead.
Fabrizio Romano reported today that Bergvall is on the verge of joining Barcelona, with the Spanish club having an accepted proposal of €7m plus €3m add-ons from Djurgardens. Bergvall is currently in Barcelona with his family, meeting with Barcelona legend Deco to discuss the details of his contract.
While it was suggested that City had been scouting Bergvall with an eye on a possible summer move, it seems that their hopes of securing the player have been dashed, with Barcelona close to securing his signature. The Catalan giants are expected to include a significant release clause in his contract, a standard practice for their players.
With Bergvall’s move to Barcelona nearly complete, it will be interesting to see how he adapts to his new club. The talented teenager has already drawn comparisons to Jude Bellingham, who has emerged as one of the world’s top players at the age of 20 with Real Madrid.
Although Bergvall will not be joining City, the club’s extensive scouting network ensures that they are constantly on the lookout for promising young talents worldwide. In fact, City has recently acquired Claudio Echeverri from River Plate and has a host of talented young stars at the CFA.
Despite missing out on Bergvall, City’s commitment to developing young talents remains evident. Meanwhile, City fans can expect the club to continue scouring the globe for future prospects.
