Etihad Stadium transfer officials are set to receive rewards from a contractual clause installed into a Manchester City exit finalised last summer. The rewards are expected to come from Morgan Rogers, who left the club following several loan spells away from the Etihad Stadium during his time with the Premier League champions.

City recruited Rogers in the summer of 2019 from West Bromwich Albion and then sanctioned three successive loan spells in the English Football League at Lincoln City, Bournemouth, and most recently, Blackpool. However, with no clear pathway into Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, Rogers and Manchester City decided to part ways after a four-year agreement last summer, and he has since joined Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Rogers has a ‘verbal agreement’ in place to move from Middlesbrough to Aston Villa and has received the ‘Here We Go’ over a move back into the Premier League. Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas also reported that Aston Villa have agreed a fee for Rogers that could rise to £16 million if add-ons installed in the agreement are reached.

Manchester City are likely to receive communication from the Riverside Stadium over a sell-on clause installed into the deal that took Rogers to Middlesbrough last summer. The Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski reported earlier this month that Manchester City inserted a ‘high sell-on fee’ to protect themselves if Morgan Rogers took off at his new club – and that is likely to become active just six months later.

According to further details provided by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Manchester City will receive 25% of the transfer fee, which is detailed as being an agreement worth an initial £8 million plus a further £7 million in add-ons.

Manchester City are known for inserting sell-on clauses and buy-back options into a number of their recent deals, but not all of their high-profile deals have included these clauses. For example, no such agreement was inserted into the deal that saw Cole Palmer move to Chelsea, with City not securing a sell-on clause and instead regarding a £40 million guaranteed payment as a good deal, according to reports.
