Palmeiras playmaker, Raphael Veiga, at 28 years old, has expressed his desire to play in Europe, with Manchester City as one of his preferred destinations. The Brazilian had an impressive season, scoring 18 goals and providing 16 assists, sparking speculation about his future. In an interview with AS, Veiga mentioned his interest in several European teams, including Barcelona, Madrid, City, and Arsenal, amongst others.
Despite expressing his desire to play for City, Veiga’s age may be a factor that hinders a potential move to the Etihad. Since joining Palmeiras in December 2018, Veiga has an impressive record, scoring 83 goals and providing 34 assists in 257 appearances. He has also won seven major trophies, including Brazilian Championships, Brazilian Cup, Brazilian Super Cup, Copa Libertadores titles, and Copa Sudamericana.
Veiga’s goal threat and creativity have drawn comparisons to City’s Kevin De Bruyne. However, despite his interest, City is reportedly considering a much younger player as a potential replacement for De Bruyne.
Recent reports suggest that City is eyeing Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. Manager Pep Guardiola is said to be a “big fan” of the German player, and the club may make efforts to sign him this summer. Wirtz, although not a like-for-like replacement for De Bruyne, has similarities in his game that could lead him to become an equally influential figure for City.
Veiga’s desire to play in Europe, particularly for a club like Manchester City, is clear. However, with City’s reported interest in a younger player like Wirtz, it seems that Veiga’s potential move to the Etihad may not be on the cards due to his age. Nevertheless, his impressive record and skillset have caught the eye of European clubs, and opportunities for a move overseas may still present themselves in the near future.
