Reports from Germany suggest that a potential transfer battle could take place between Manchester City and Liverpool over the signing of Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich this summer.
As the reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City is expected to address their midfield needs in the upcoming transfer window due to uncertainties surrounding several players’ futures, including Kalvin Phillips and Bernardo Silva.
With the possibility of West Ham exercising their option to buy Phillips and Silva potentially seeking an exit from the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City’s board is likely to seek replacements and reinforcements in midfield.
One potential candidate is Kimmich, a player whom Pep Guardiola has previously worked closely with during his time at Bayern Munich.
According to reports from German outlet BILD’s Christian Falk, both Manchester City and Liverpool are interested in signing Kimmich, as his current contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Kimmich has previously spoken highly of Manchester City, referring to playing against the club as a “great opportunity” during a pre-season campaign in 2023.
Other figures in football have also acknowledged Guardiola’s admiration for Kimmich, with Ralf Rangnick mentioning Guardiola’s personal affection for the player.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester City will make a concrete proposal for Kimmich, but their interest in strengthening their midfield is almost certain as they approach the second half of the season.
The potential addition of Kimmich could significantly bolster Manchester City’s squad, especially given his relationship with Guardiola and his proven quality as a midfielder.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it will be interesting to see how this potential transfer battle unfolds between the two Premier League giants over the services of the talented German midfielder.
